Buying your own plan in the Southern & Southeast Oklahoma

Southern and southeast Oklahoma is spread out, and a lot of everyday medical travel crosses state lines. Families near the Red River often see specialists in North Texas, and households near the Arkansas line use Fort Smith.

That cross-border pattern is where health sharing's lack of a network helps. You can use a hospital in Sherman, Paris or Fort Smith the same way you'd use one in Ardmore: pay as a self-pay patient up to your Initial Unshareable Amount, then submit eligible bills.

Crossing into Texas or Arkansas for care

With an insurance plan, an out-of-state hospital can mean out-of-network bills. Health sharing doesn't have a network, so the question is different: is the bill eligible under the guidelines, and did you call before planned care?

Before a planned procedure across the line, ask the hospital for its self-pay price in writing and open a Needs case first. For an emergency, go to the nearest ER and notify the sharing program within 48 hours.

Many people in this region are also citizens of the Chickasaw or Choctaw Nation and may get care through those health systems. Check that first; it can change what you need from us. Special Marketplace rules may apply too (source).

Who it fits here, and who should stay on insurance

Usually a good fit: healthy individuals and families who buy their own plan, self-employed people, early retirees under 65, and households whose income is too high for much Marketplace help.

Usually better on insurance: anyone who qualifies for SoonerCare, anyone with a serious ongoing condition who needs it paid for in year one, anyone planning a pregnancy in the next nine months, anyone who needs regular mental-health therapy, and anyone whose tax credit makes an ACA plan cheap.

In this region specifically: If you're eligible for tribal health care or SoonerCare, or a Marketplace plan with a big tax credit, those can cost less. We'll tell you if that's your situation.

Questions we hear from this region

Can I use a hospital in Texas or Arkansas?

Yes. Health sharing doesn't use a provider network, so state lines don't change how a bill is handled. Call the program before planned care and ask the hospital for its self-pay price.

Is there primary care near me if I live out past Idabel or Poteau?

Our standard pairing includes a virtual primary care membership, so your doctor's team is a phone or video call away wherever you live. You still go in person for anything hands-on.

Is this health insurance?

No. Health care sharing and direct primary care are alternatives to insurance. Sharing is voluntary and not guaranteed, and it isn't Minimum Essential Coverage. Oklahoma has no state penalty for going without insurance.

Tell us who needs care and what you pay now. We'll walk you through the options, including when insurance is the better fit.

Free, no obligation. Oklahoma households only.

Health care sharing
Health care sharing ministries are not insurance and are not regulated as insurance. Sharing of medical expenses is voluntary and not guaranteed. Review each organization's guidelines for details, limitations, and state-specific notices.

Oklahoma note
Under 36 O.S. § 110(11), the Oklahoma Insurance Department does not regulate health care sharing ministries and says it cannot provide consumer protections to their members. Disputes are settled with the ministry under its guidelines. Health care sharing is not Minimum Essential Coverage.

Direct primary care
Direct primary care is a membership with a primary care practice. Oklahoma's Health Care Empowerment Act (36 O.S. § 4604) lets patients pay providers directly and says care bought that way is not an offer of insurance. A DPC membership does not pay for specialists, hospital care or emergencies.

Discount plans
THIS PLAN IS NOT INSURANCE and is not intended to replace health insurance. Discount plans give you reduced fees at participating providers; they do not pay or reimburse providers. They are not ACA Qualified Health Plans.

How we're paid
We may receive compensation from some organizations we recommend. This does not change our evaluation of how they work. See our Referral Marketing Disclosure.
